Sustainability
Sustainability at heart

We put sustainability at the heart of our business because we care deeply about our customers, our society and our planet

Sustainability

As part of our sustainability commitment, we’ve partnered with Ecologi who plant trees and fund the world’s best climate crisis solutions. Each month trees are planted and projects are supported around the world to offset our carbon footprint. Above and beyond that we fund the planting of extra trees throughout the year on behalf of our customers. We already have over 1000 trees in our forest and have offset more than 20 tonnes of CO2.

SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

We take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously

Our mission is to promote a healthy society and to play our part in preserving our precious planet for future generations. We strive to do this by maintaining a climate positive business through the following actions:

WE OFFSET OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT AND FUND TREE PLANTING AND CLIMATE POSITIVE PROJECTS AROUND THE WORLD

In order to ensure VIVID Studios is climate positive, we’ve calculated our approximate usage so that we can offset this as well as go above and beyond.

Electricity

Based on the last 12 months usage we’ve estimated our electricity usage for the next 12 months at approximately 1850 KwH which equates to 0.47 tonnes CO2e. Therefore we’ll offset an additional 1.00 tonne CO2e to be climate positive.

Travel

Regular staff journeys to and from work amount to approximately 25 miles per working day and total approximately 6500 miles a year which equates to 1.56 tonnes CO2e. Therefore we’ll offset an additional 2.00 tonnes CO2e to be climate positive.

We’ve estimated customer journeys to and from the studio for photo sessions, viewings and collection of products (based on an average round trip of 25 miles) to total approximately 15600 miles a year which equates to 4.23 tonnes CO2e. Therefore we’ll offset an additional 5.00 tonnes CO2e to be climate positive.

Plans to reduce

Understanding what we use is important as it allows us to make sure we can plan to try and reduce our impact, not just offset it.

Aiming to deliver at least 50% of customer orders via a planned delivery schedule could save approximately 0.70 tonnes CO2e per year.

Monitoring electricity usage to identify further savings and researching studio lighting and computer usage are other key areas.

We’re actively working with the Master Photographers Association to reach out to and help our suppliers to produce and supply sustainable products for our customers. We’re aiming for at least 50% of our products to be carbon neutral or sustainably sourced.

Over the next 12 months we plan to source all of our products from within the UK.

Going above and beyond

“Climate positive” means going above and beyond achieving net zero carbon emissions to create an actual environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

As at 9th March 2021, in addition to offsetting 12.53 tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to 10 long haul flights or 38 square metres of sea ice saved or 31,087 miles driven in a car) we’ve funded the planting of 1133 trees and supported a number of climate positive projects which include Protecting and Restoring Forests in Papua New Guinea – read more – and Geothermal Power Production in West Java, Indonesia – read more

WE SOURCE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES LOCALLY WHENEVER POSSIBLE

For example, when we refurbished our Newent studio recently, we employed local tradespeople all based within walking distance of the studio for: painting & decorating of the reception area; supply & fitting of new floor coverings; replacement of old energy-inefficient windows with new double-glazed units; installation of new kitchen units.

WE GIVE PREFERENCE TO SUPPLIERS WITH ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS AND PUBLISHED SUSTAINABILITY POLICIES

As a Master Photographers Association (MPA) climate positive member, we have access to extensive research into climate positive suppliers and sustainability issues generally and give preference to suppliers who score highly against the MPA sustainability criteria.

WE ENDEAVOUR TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS WITH OUR CUSTOMERS

As well as providing information and educational links via our website and social media posts, we fund the planting of trees on behalf of our customers when they book a photo session or buy a gift experience voucher.

WE POWER OUR STUDIOS WITH 100% RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY AND PLAN TO INSTALL ENERGY-EFFICIENT ENVIRONMENT LIGHTING

Our studios are powered with sustainable electricity supplied by E-ON Next and we’re planning to replace all of the existing fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting by the end of 2022.

WE HOST OUR WEB PAGES ON GREEN SERVERS AND OPTIMISE OUR WEB DESIGN TO MINIMISE CARBON EMISSIONS

This website is hosted on green Google Inc. servers as verified by the Green Web Foundation and we constantly monitor the carbon impact of each page in terms of CO2 per page view. This information is made available in real time to all site visitors via a widget in the page footer.

WE RECYCLE OUR STUDIO WASTE

All paper, cardboard, glass and recyclable plastics are recycled via a local council recycling scheme. Used ink cartridges and batteries are put to one side and periodically taken to a local recycling centre. Old studio props are donated to a local community interest company for refurbishment and re-use.

WE USE RECYCLED/ SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS FOR ALL OUR BUSINESS STATIONERY AND MARKETING LITERATURE

Our outdoor posters are printed on 160 micron polypropylene, which is more eco-friendly than traditional vinyl. Our tree-free cotton business cards are made from 100% recycled T-shirt offcuts that normally get thrown away. We are planning to have all of our new product and price lists printed on 100% recycled paper stocks using certified carbon neutral production in time for our re-opening on or shortly after 12th April 2021.

WE OPERATE A PAPERLESS ADMINISTRATION SYSTEM

All of our bookings, quotes and invoices are generated and sent electronically i.e. online and via text or email and we only print documents when absolutely necessary. All of our business banking is conducted online and with paperless statements. Our gift vouchers are delivered digitally.

What is a ‘carbon footprint’ and why is it important?

The term carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gases, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e), emitted by something e.g. a person’s activities, or a product’s manufacture and transport, during a given period.

The main issue with CO2 emissions is that they enhance the greenhouse effect and contribute to global warming and climate change.
